That’s actually really interesting. I wonder how many pastries there are that we don’t know about. Kind of scary to think about.
Not sure why you’re seeing that. I’m on the same instance as you and I see them all, so it’s not a defederation issue. You don’t have a big block list, I assume. Seems strange.
Saving you a click, probably that they removed the vegetation around the house and replaced it with river stones, which they did to help with drainage and reduce water damage. They also replaced the roof with a steel roof, which probably helped, but not as much as clearing around the house.
It’s not necessary, for sure (I personally only have this account), but reasons I’ve seen are:
Might be other reasons, too
They’re separate accounts on separate servers, so currently there’s no way to merge them. It would be like asking if you could merge your Gmail account and your Yahoo email account.
But “forever” is a long time. It’s completely doable from a technical point of view to merge two Lemmy accounts (and doesn’t require two different companies to work together like in the email example), so maybe that will be a feature at some point. Because of the potential for instances to change policies or defederate with others that you care about, many people have asked for a way to migrate an account from one instance to another (copying all the post/comment history, subscriptions, etc.), which is a similar problem and one I bet we’ll see sooner than later.
It’s really not, at least for the text part. Text posts and comments take almost nothing and storage continues to get cheaper.
Mainstream platforms are selling out because they’ve always had others and shareholders who ultimately want to make money.
I disagree. One big hunk of value of a place like this is being able to look back at old threads. How many times did people say they always put “Reddit” in front of their Google searches to get the information they were looking for? This could be the same.
I believe that’s for comments that are newer than ten minutes (same maybe also unread?).
