Other than me, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a person, business, etc, in the wild running Linux.
Even business signs/billboard I’ve seen run Windows.
Insufferable FOSS/Linux nerds are ruining Lemmy.

Then learn to fact check instead of believing rumours.

But oPeN sOuRce iS sAfe.
Ubuntu, one of the most popular Linux Distros, already did that.
Or are we just hating on Windows?
Realistically probably not getting one for less than $160CAD.
At that point, might as well just buy a used Dell optiplex or something. These boards are absurdly priced, and you’ll never get it for MSRP.
Even with the added power consumption of the Dell you’ll pull out ahead lol
Just checked. All of the “cheap” ones require you to order 2+, and then have insane shipping costs. The rest are $100-120 CAD.
I don’t think these things will ever be affordable. People who want one badly, will pay the money, and everyone knows it. No need to sell them at MSRP.
I don’t buy any pis because they are $100+ in Canada.
Remember when it was supposed to be a cheap computer? Ya…
Proof? Has never happened to me. Your ass must hurt from pulling that out of it.
What’s that mean? It worked. Go jerk off about Linux elsewhere.
Each of my family/friends work in different industries. None of us can move to Linux.
I have a print shop, where I run wide format Roland printers and Graphtec plotters. Graphtec needs Windows/Mac, Roland needs Windows.
My dad is a farmer, uses a ton of farming software, all Windows-only.
My girlfriend is a biochemist, and the whole industry runs off Windows-only software/drivers.
I could go on and on, but pretty much Linux cannot be used in any of our fields. So again, I am convinced Linux users are either developers, or don’t have jobs, because it’s nearly impossible to find any industry that doesn’t require Mac or Windows.
That’s awesome, but may I ask what do you use to replace Adobe Suite? Even the next big thing, Affinity, doesn’t have Linux builds.
I’m pretty much convinced that anyone that uses Linux either doesn’t use their computer much, or they are strictly a developer. Linux is missing way too many pieces of software, or even drivers for things, that would allow the majority of people to switch.
Just thinking about all of the different jobs that my friends and family have, they all use some kind of software or machine that has windows/mac only drivers, that using Linux is not possible.
I was having problems with Firefox yesterday and reinstalled it. It was 1 click on Windows 11 for me.
I don’t understand? When you launch any browser it’s a 1 click “yes” to set as default.
To set it via Windows settings, you just search “browser” and select it from the drop down.
Bought a Brother printer. Opened up “printers” on Windows 11, it picked up my printer wirelessly, I clicked “add” and it was done.
No garbage software or anything.
So printers definitely do just work on Windows.
I setup the VPN tunnel. It’s a toggle switch on my phone that allows me to access my network as if I was home. It’s free (using wireguard app), and way more secure, as my phone is the only device allowed to access it.
Downside is that I need to add devices manually if I wanted, but upside is that it’s super secure and not directly open to the web via domain.
Ubuntu is the best bet for a distro to just work well out of the box.
Granted I have still had a fuck ton of issues, errors, etc, but Ubuntu is the only distro that has worked the best out of the box. Fedora was a broken mess, and Mint was in between.
So if you want anyone to not give up on Linux, direct them towards Ubuntu first. You can always switch distros later, but spending 3 days trying to fix issues on a different distro isn’t fun.
