  • Slackware took like 40 3.5" double sided double density disks, and woe betide the poor soul who didn’t label them because the stack was a foot high and you damn well would get them mixed up.

When doing it from home I would frequently run into issues that required me to completely reinstall dos and Telemate to go back to usenet and get help, print the help and then take another stab.

Dos and Linux had different opinions about SCSI chain termination so this usually involved full cover off to move jumpers on the hard drives and sometimes irq jumpers on the motherboard to get the modem AND sound card working right.

Then the fact that to get online once you had slackware installed required you to write your own SLIP/PPP dialup scripts because every ISP was doing their own thing.

Honestly it was a fucking wonderful time. Many happy memories.

  • literally ran a basic wardialer in my area code and had guest access to multiple government systems. I felt like matthew broderick would have been so proud.

I never got anywhere but it freaked my parents out they were not proud like i had been expecting at all.

Never actually messed around with anything besides figuring out the no password guest accounts so not really thrilling but it was super easy to get access.

Also when email was first a thing you could just telnet to port 25 on a server and write raw SMTP messages and most servers would just accept them. You would say yes this message is coming from [email protected] and it would say sure thing!

when I was a child and didn’t have to pay bills I would lie in the bathtub with a washcloth over my face to protect my eyes with the drain open and just lay there in the warm shower until i used up all the water in the heater.

It’s such a nice feeling to just lie there and be gently pattered by warm water
