  • You’re assuming some kind of objective point of view, but there are competing interests involved here. Those “capabilities” need not be things that are in the interest of the end users. For example, DRM, micropayments to unlock content, region coding, state censorship, etc etc etc. Bullshit that capital uses to exploit humans.

The protocol might well be complete and need no “extension” (as you mean the word) for us, and yet Meta might have many things they want to extend it to do. The whole point of this is, we have conflicting interests. Meta can push things that are not in their users interests because they have leverage. They hold our friends and their content hostage. And they lie and manipulate their users, who simply don’t care about things like this. Your idea that we are talking about our protocol vs their extensions competing on merits that appeal to users is just totally missunderstanding the objections.

I think you are getting too hung up on the term EEE. You think you know what the individual words mean, so you know what it’s all about. But it’s just a name for a complex strategy that has been used successfully against us many times in the past. Rather than quibbling with the definition, you should spend some time reading the history.

You lifted one word out of my comment and focused on that single word that had nothing to do with the actual point so you could avoid any acknowledging the criticism. I’m not playing your stupid games. I don’t accept for a moment you’re engaging in good faith, sorry.

If you don’t want to talk about why this was a shitty, hateful thing to post, nobody is forcing you to talk to me, buddy. Just go on with your life and try no to hurt anyone else.

It’s not hateful unless I think it is. What might you mean by that rhetorical gem. Are you trying to argue that there is no such thing as objective hate? That I can just choose not to find hate speech hateful, and that fixes everything?

Is it? I mean it clearly references it, but unless I’m not getting something, that’s a hateful meme slurring transgenderism, and this is a hateful meme slurring religion. If either of them are intended ironically, they’re cutting pretty damn close to the Poe line. I’m not seeing any parody.

  • I think that running a YT channel large enough to support yourself has problems of equal magnitude. I also think that depending on making money from YT impressions rather than trying to develop other means of monetizing your videos (merch, embedded sponsors, patrons, community servers, digital assets, etc) is pretty risky, given YT’s track record of radically restructuring and cutting payments and Google’s track record of screwing over everyone who ever counts on them. It only takes a moment to get de-platformed for literally no damn reason. It’s worth the effort to try it. All a creator really has to do is say, “it’s okay if you mirror this content on PeerTube.” That’s not a lot of work.

  • No, we don’t disagree, though you might be reading in a stronger point than I made. I don’t recall saying it’s all capital’s fault, whatever “it” is. However, I could probably be baited into doing so.

A tremendous amount of capital has been poured into Internet ventures. It out-competes mere human altruism. I think that if we want to have meaningful human experiences in our lives, we need to intentionally create spaces capital is not interested in occupying, or is prevented from occupying.

I think the janky details are important. Not the actual details, just the fact that they are janky. It forces one to understand and engage with the medium, which gives one power over the medium instead of the other way around. I think humans getting old, sharing what they know, and passing on is a vital feature of the human social experience, not a bug we need to patch around. (Ed Hew’s registrar.ca will always be my spiritual domain registry.) There are lots of good business reasons why we would like commodified services provided by fungible service units rather than a society of human relationships, but I suspect there are some important psychological reasons for doing it the messy way, though no benefits to capital.

I think human spaces will always be fleeting and messy, as humanity constantly loses control of the most lucrative and populated spaces to our own greedy wealth. Human spaces are hard to use because they are always shifting, displaced and forced out to the frontiers, where things are less comfortable. In a real way we are all becoming marginalized citizens of an increasingly less human globe-spanning empire.
