  • The reason Doom got a reputation that it can run on anything is that it did run on just about anything.

The original requirement was for a 386 CPU which ran between 12 and 40 MHz. The 386 was launched in 1985. That means that at the time the Doom was released, it could run on 8-year-old hardware.

First of all, the person doing this is an asshole. Filing false DMCA claims is a dick move and can fuck with people’s livelihoods.

Second, if this is something that causes harm due to your policy, perhaps it’s time to review that policy and the ways you enforce it.

And third, the DMCA itself needs a serious review of how it needs to be handled and how to reduce harm on the innocent people affected by false claims.

Other marketplaces/launchers are generally covered by some third-party alternative that has most of the relevant functionality.

So far, I haven’t had any issues with any purchased games under Linux. If it doesn’t run as-is after installing, it’s just been a question of choosing Proton in a drop-down menu. I’ve been Linux-only for about two years now, and gaming used to be the only thing that kept me locked into Windows. That said, there are games that won’t run at all under Linux, often due to anti-cheat software.
