well on unRaid you just click add a pool and you select which drives you want in it, then you just tell your shares to use that pool

I saw a post earlier on how someone was using the free hosting in Oracle to run their instance, I made an account but haven’t gotten it setup

It works great I keep my containers in the cache so they operate faster, and when moving files to my server it gets placed on the cache initially so the transfer is quick, then later it will migrate into the slower hard drives on it’s own time

I upgraded my gaming machine and used my old motherboard and cpu and loaded unraid on there, the i7 was great for plex transcoding and eventually i ran out of sata ports on my machine so I stuck a sata expander card in my one pcie slot, luckily the motherboard had two m.2 slots so I used that for cache. the case I used was a node304 and over time I added drives as I was running out of space. eventually I build a separate JBOD chassis to hold more drives

I feel like algorithms ruined social media for me, when I open Instagram I don’t see any content from my friends or family so I just close it

boredom has made me the man I am today, its tough now a days to get bored and not pull out your phone and browse lemmy instead of doing your hobbies

Podcast addict was perfect for me, the ability to automatically add things to your queue based on priority was great. I used it to play a 10 minute news podcast every morning then jump back to whatever podcast I was listening to and have other weekly podcasts jump in after that

I just cancelled everything, no more subscriptions for me, except for the yearly re-up on usenet indexers

I forgot my sony earbuds have an app, I really enjoy the sony earbuds but the mic is completely useless, I tried to be cool like my coworker and use earbuds for meetings and I can hear him clearly through his apple earbuds but no one can understand me, I had to order a headset to use for meetings in order to participate

for me 1080p is fine, I dont have that big of a tv, my concern is just storage space and my laziness. If I cared a bit more I would probably setup a second instance of Radarr to do 4k for my personal viewing, or if I didnt share my library with my family and friends. With 4k comes other issues you normally dont see when streaming since streaming services transcode down the move the bit rate is a lot lower and you dont see any issues, but when streaming locally the bit rate can go well over 100mbit and most tv’s dont have over 100mbit connection, so you need something like an nvidia shield or xbox to not have stuttering, but it does look really nice seeing clear blacks instead of the blocks you get when watching something from like prime video. its comparable to playing the bluray if you have the right setup and file.

I prefer to do 1080p mainly because I share my library with friends and family and let them request whatever they want, their requests are automatically approved and pulled so my storage space is important, for example someone requested the office, thats like 560gb right there, but I really liked the show chernobyl so I pulled that at 4k and its only 5 episodes and thats already 140gb

I store almost everything but my few favorite movies in 1080p. but I also let friends request content and I have automatic lists setup to add new stuff as it comes out so I try not to keep 4k, plus watching 4k outside of the house can be stressful on the server so 1080p is good for me, I have about 60tb of 1080p shows movies and youtube series

I really wish there was a way to just buy a digital file of a movie I want so I can have it on my plex

probably the same way most waterproof devices with removable batteries, like action cams, they use rubber gaskets

this makes me want to spin up my own instance just for myself to follow other communities, I guess that would be the best way to do it

yeah I feel you I started getting rid of all my subscriptions about a year ago, I just went back to lightroom 6 which I own already and got rid of photoshop, I didnt use it for anything professional just making memes so I just use photopea for that. then for streaming I just setup a plex server and learned about usenet. I also started looking for software like davinci resolve instead of premiere pro, the old version of sketchup that they offer for free instead of the new cloud based one that I use for planning home remodeling. then I just started cancelling things that were nice to have but didnt really need, like the google play pass just because I wanted to fight against subscriptions and went and built a modded game boy advance instead
